Signing on the air in the fall of 1971 WEEM (With Efforts of Ernest Miller) WEEM has been a springboard to countless students and their future careers in media, entertainment and more.
The station is owned by South Madison Community School Corporation and is operated as a non-commercial broadcast entity. As a non-commercial, or non-comm, radio station WEEM relies on funding from the school corporation, donations from supporters and limited revenue from advertising called underwriting (or branding). Underwriting is a far more affordable alternative than conventional media advertising and is favorable among those who wish to support their local community. Underwriting, according to NPR guidelines, is defined as third-party pieces read aloud, or recorded, by the station personnel that are technical and informative, allowing listeners to form their own opinion about the product or service. WEEM is the award-winning, student-run high school radio station of Pendleton Heights High School in Pendleton, Indiana. It broadcasts a current hit music (CHR) format.
In 2012 WEEM was recognized by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters as the Radio Station of the Year.
In 2016 WEEM was recognized by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System as the National High School Radio Station of the Year.
With a primary service area that includes; Madison, Hamilton and Hancock counties WEEM is uniquely situated between the Indianapolis, and Muncie Nielsen Radio Markets and is one of few independently owned and operated radio stations in the immediate area.
