The station is owned by South Madison Community School Corporation and is operated as a non-commercial broadcast entity. As a non-commercial, or non-comm, radio station WEEM relies on funding from the school corporation, donations from supporters and limited revenue from advertising called underwriting (or branding). Underwriting is a far more affordable alternative than conventional media advertising and is favorable among those who wish to support their local community. Underwriting, according to NPR guidelines, is defined as third-party pieces read aloud, or recorded, by the station personnel that are technical and informative, allowing listeners to form their own opinion about the product or service.
